About Old Greek Stories by James Baldwin
Greece, for many ages they have been a source of delight to young people and old, to the ignorant and the learned, to all who love to hear about and contemplate things mysterious, beautiful, and grand. They have become so incorporated into our language and thought, and so interwoven with our literature, that we could not do away with them now if we would. They are a portion of our heritage from the distant past, and they form perhaps as important a part of our intellectual life as they did of that of the people among whom they originated. That many of these tales should be read by children at an early age no intelligent person will deny. Sufficient reason for this is to be found in the real pleasure that every child derives from their perusal and in the preparation of this volume no other reason has been considered.

This was an odd read. It's a collection of Greek myths that were rewritten, apparently by someone who knew the tales, but didn't try very hard to get them right. The simplest example of this is the fact that the author used some Greek names for the gods (Zeus, Poseidon) and some Roman names for the gods (Diana, Venus), which isn't exactly a crime, but it's still confusing. In addition to this odd naming of the gods, some of the stories were jumbled together, where, especially in the first few tales, she'd start telling one story, jump to summarize a second, mention a third, and then finish with a fourth. It got somewhat better as the book progressed, but it still cropped up even in the last tale.
For all that the stories were acceptably well written. If I didn't know anything about Greek (or Roman) mythology, and I never cared to learn it (or maybe if I wanted a simple introduction for my child), I might have enjoyed this book more. But if that's not the case for you I'd say look elsewhere.

Though it had Roman names it was still the same.P.S in the book when it shows you a Roman name press and hold on it and it will tell you who it is.
Great introductory book to Greek mythology. This book is a re-tell of many myths for children and adults. Though some stories are omitted (like the creation of the Minotaur) even if further events of the story are present (creation of the labyrinth or death of the Minotaur).
This is the first step to start reading more complex Greek classics. It will get you in the mood for more.
When I got this book, Old Greek Stories, I thought that it would have the Greek gods, but, no, it had the Roman names for the Greek gods. In other words, it's not a collection of Greek stories, it's Greek stories that have Roman names to them. The characters that aren't the gods are Greek, but the gods are given their Roman names. That's the only thing that I didn't like about this book.
A wonderful read and fantastic story! Book received in reasonable amount of time and in new condition as expected. Very pleased customer.
Lots of fun. Read it to my 11 year old on a 24 hour train trip from Denver. The language needs updating to make it fun, but that was easy to do as I was reading It to her. Watching "KongSkull Island" yesterday, she exclaimed she knew the story of Daedalus (Sam Jackson's character references it in the beginning). Not bad for a free book!
Book is sold under false pretenses. It says it comes with a free audiobook. I was expecting an audiobook version of "Old Greek Stories" but it is / was some special at audible.com which is no longer active, and certainly not available for people who are already members of Audible.com. Sure the book only cost $1, but I still think this is false advertising and I feel cheated.
I give the book 4 stars, but take away 3 for the false advertising.
